Canning and Preserving Class

  • Red Mountain Trails 27314 East Ambassador Pr Northeast Benton City, WA, 99320 United States (map)

Have you wanted to try canning but haven't tried it yet? Are you nervous to try, after reading stories about what could go wrong? Or maybe you've done it and just want to brush up on some skills? Join us on the farm for a fun (and delicious) class. Canning food is one method of preserving food that is sustainable, healthy, and allows you complete control of your food.

We will take fresh produce (whatever is in season for the date of the class) and preserve it using the water-bath method of canning. Some recipes include pickled asparagus (spring), berry jams and jellies (spring/early summer), relishes, sauces, syrups, and soups. This is a wonderful skill for anyone wanting to preserve their garden's bounty, make fabulous gifts, and save on groceries.

You will learn:

  • how to select produce for canning

  • what recipes and ingredients are appropriate for water-bath canning and what ones to avoid

  • food safety and canning safety

  • delicious recipes!

You can preserve year round -- save money by preserving sale produce at the grocery store, make jams, jellies, sauces, pickles, pie filling, canned fruit, and edible gifts for the holidays. There is always something ripe and ready, and the best thing about canning is getting the best produce at the best possible time to make amazing recipes!
